devolo: Trend towards DLNA-compatible Internet TV devices is spurring growth of powerline home networks

devolo AG of Aachen, Germany, the global market leader in powerline-based network solutions, is seeing a global trend towards home networking, proceeding from a new generation of Internet-compatible TV devices. The German Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM) also confirms this. Nearly all major consumer electronics manufacturers offer flat-screen televisions that are also capable of playing back Internet videos, for example from YouTube. In addition, digital content such as photos and videos from computers or NAS hard drives can be displayed directly on the TV. Here devolo sees dLAN as the ideal backbone for multimedia home networking, since the technology is fully compatible with the CE network standard DLNA.

devolo, the technological leader in the powerline market, presents dLAN®, the ideal home network for connecting the IT world consisting of computers, NAS hard drives and printers with the new, network-compatible generation of CE devices. For some time already, products such as AV receivers, Blu-ray players and game consoles have been provided with a network jack. Yet the new generation of Internet TV devices appears to be acting as the catalyst. They awaken the home user‘s desire to finally network the living room, as was done earlier with the home office. This is confirmed not only by data collected by devolo; BITKOM‘s "Digital Home" work group also anticipates the number of home networks to grow exponentially in the coming years through TV devices with web services. The DLNA standard is important for trouble-free networking of the consumer electronics worlds. It enables direct communication between CE devices without the consumer having to do any configuration. Thanks to full DLNA compatibility, devolo‘s dLAN® is ideal for creating a comprehensive, expandable home network. In addition, the easy dLAN® installation without using a computer is a real advantage, particularly when networking CE devices.

Home networks with dLAN® – very easy to install and expand

With powerline technology, the power line is used as a long network cable; there are no new cables to be routed. With the dLAN® 200 AV, cable lengths of up to 300 meters can be bridged without degrading the connection quality, thanks to an innovative design. A maximum transmission speed of 200 Mbps combined with the integrated AESpro encryption ensures fast and secure surfing. The dLAN® network was developed for private users and is suitable for use in apartments as well as in private homes. Unlike WLAN, dLAN® provides continuously high transmission quality. The integration of a network-compatible product into a home network is extremely fast and easy with dLAN®: the adapter is plugged into a free power outlet and connected to the LAN device using an Ethernet cable. The secure AESpro encryption is now activated at the touch of a button – and you‘re done. The device can immediately connect to the home network or Internet. The dLAN® can also be expanded successively in this way.

The dLAN® 200 product family – HD performance in multiple variations

The devolo dLAN® 200 AV product family includes a wide variety of adapters for very diverse applications. With the dLAN® 200 AVsmart+, devolo is offering the world‘s first powerline device with an LC status display, the "dLAN® screen". Networking home entertainment devices equipped with a network port to a powerful home network and the Internet is now even faster and easier. The combination of the display and integrated encryption button makes integration in the powerline network particularly easy—without any need for a computer for the installation. With the dLAN® 200 AV mini, the company also offers an extremely compact adapter that can be used nearly everywhere since it has a depth of only 29 mm.

"The increasing range of Internet-compatible CE devices offered, such as TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players, AV receivers and Internet radios, is spurring the market for home networks," comments Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG. "The devolo dLAN® products were made for these very areas of application, since the installation is extremely easy, no new cables have to be routed and the devices offer the critical stability and speed, even for HD video streaming."
